Screenwriters Showcase is a student-run annual event at the end of Spring Quarter designed to introduce outstanding student work to the industry. Students are invited to submit feature-length and TV scripts which are read and critiqued by industry experts (managers, agents, producers, executives, etc.).
The event is part of the broader TFT Festival Week held every June, usually the week before graduation.
This year, the UCLA Screenwriting Showcase will be held on June 12, 2017 at the James Bridges Theater at 7:30 p.m.
The Showcase will have speakers from the school and industry, as well as an awards ceremony for the best feature scripts and TV pilots written over the previous school year. There will be refreshments, a photo booth, red carpet, and more!
Every year, the program also honors a writer with the UCLA Distinguished Award in Screenwriting. Past recipients include:
2016 Adam McKay
2015 Graham Moore
2014 Callie Khouri
2013 David Magee
2012 John Logan
2011 Aaron Sorkin
2010 Laeta Kalogridis
2009 Dustin Lance Black
2008 Eric Roth
2007 Daniel Pyne
2006 Scott Kosar
and many, many more dating back to 1991.
The Screenwriters Showcase also announces the annual Lew and Pamela Hunter/Jonathan and Janice Zakin Chair Holder in Screenwriting Award. The Hunter/Zakin Chair Holder in Screenwriting Award was established in 1999 by San Francisco businessman Jonathan N. Zakin and requires that the recipient teach a 10-week screenwriting seminar at UCLA TFT. Zakin is a member of UCLA TFT's Executive Board. Hunter is an emeritus professor in UCLA TFT's prestigious Screenwriting program. Previous Hunter/Zakin Chairs in Screenwriting have included Cormac and Marianne Wibberley (National Treasure, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle), Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar) and Sacha Gervasi (The Terminal), among others.
Students recognized at the Screenwriters Showcase have gone on to be staffed on TV shows, sign with managers/agents, option winning scripts, and receive other distinctions.
For students:
Usually scripts are due the week after Winter Quarter ends. In order to enter, you are required to volunteer to help with the event. Showcase is entirely student-run. Meetings will begin late in the Fall Quarter to bring you up to speed.
Incoming MFA-ers are welcome to attend in June. Here's the site!
All scripts submitted for Showcase must have been written at UCLA--for a screenwriting class. That amazing piece that you used to get into the program or that you’ve been working on in your spare time cannot be considered.
