Birth of Venus
Family drama, dark
A young woman, longing to escape her upbringing, travels to Tuscany to work for a wealthy English family. But when she witnesses a fatal hit and run, she becomes embroiled in a dark power struggle with the family's patriarch.
Shadows
Psychological Drama
When Esther is left home alone for the first time in almost a year, she discovers she cannot sleep without her husband beside her. As she descends into a state of delirium over the course of one weekend, she must struggle to make sense of the visions and memories that plague her.
Alma Mater: University of Cambridge
Inspiration: Cecily is endlessly inspired by families and the complex, elusive laws that govern them. She enjoys writing about the families that people are born into as well as those that they create for themselves, and uses environmental storytelling in her work to reveal new sides and depths to her characters (okay fine, sometimes she just wants to imagine that she’s on a gorgeous holiday in Italy). She’s awed by the precision and emotional authenticity of Cassavetes, Hogg and Sciamma, but she’d also watch The Departed four times a week if it were socially acceptable. And that’s on containing multitudes!
Bio: Cecily grew up in North London, and was drawn to storytelling and performance from a young age. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Cambridge, where she performed in and produced numerous student theatre productions, and began screenwriting in earnest a year after graduating. She continues to draw heavily on her experience as a student of literature and lover of theatre in all her work.
